UEFA Super Cup: Luis Enrique Admits PSG ‘Didn’t Deserve’ Win Over Tottenham
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique admitted his team “didn’t really deserve” their UEFA Super Cup win after pulling off a dramatic comeback against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
PSG were trailing 2-0 until the final minutes, but late goals forced a penalty shootout, where Nuno Mendes scored the winning kick. The turnaround seemed impossible when Spurs were two goals ahead in the 85th minute of this clash between the Champions League and Europa League champions.
Enrique pointed out that Tottenham looked sharper, as they had been training for six weeks, while PSG had only just returned to training after their Club World Cup final last month.
“For most of the match, Tottenham were the better side,” Enrique told TNT Sports. “We’ve only trained for six days. Football can be unfair — we were lucky to score twice in the last 10 minutes.”
Lee Kang-in pulled one back with a powerful strike into the bottom corner, and Gonçalo Ramos equalized deep into stoppage time at Stadio Friuli in Udine, sending the game to penalties.
Tottenham looked set for an upset when they went 2-0 ahead in the penalty shootout after Vitinha missed PSG’s first kick. But Spurs’ Micky van de Ven and Mathys Tel both missed their spot-kicks, while PSG scored four in a row, with Nuno Mendes smashing in the winner.
“Our players believed until the very last minute, just like our fans,” said PSG coach Luis Enrique.
It was a memorable debut for new PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who joined from Lille to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma as first choice. In the first half, Chevalier was unlucky to concede the opening goal in the 39th minute when he tipped Joao Palhinha’s shot onto the crossbar, only for Van de Ven to react quickly and score. The second goal, in the 48th minute, was partly his fault as he couldn’t stop a header from Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.
Chevalier redeemed himself in the shootout, saving Van de Ven’s penalty — a role Donnarumma had often excelled in for PSG. Donnarumma, who didn’t travel to Italy, had already announced he would be leaving the club.
“It shows he has a big personality, which you need at PSG because of the pressure here,” Enrique said. “I’m very happy for him.”
Midfielder Vitinha praised the team spirit: “That’s what being a team means — if one player makes a mistake, the others lift him up. Today it was me, and my teammates helped me. Next time, it could be someone else.”
