Tour Championship Sets Golf Record: $40M Purse, $10M to Winner
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Tour Championship now has the biggest prize in golf history, with a $40 million total purse and $10 million going to the winner. For the first time, the FedEx Cup payout will count as official PGA Tour money.
Since the FedEx Cup started in 2007, the end-of-season bonus was unofficial, and part of it was deferred. In 2019, when the playoffs were cut from four events to three, prize money for the Tour Championship was dropped, but the FedEx Cup bonus pool increased. That year also introduced “starting strokes,” where the No. 1 seed began at 10-under par. The winner of the event also won the FedEx Cup.
This year, the starting strokes system is gone. The top 30 players will all start even, like a normal tournament. A PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed the $40 million bonus pool will now be official money, with $10 million to the champion.
The $25 million FedEx Cup bonus is now split differently. Scottie Scheffler earned $10 million for leading in the regular season and will get another $5 million for being the No. 1 seed after the BMW Championship. These amounts are still part of the bonus pool but won’t be counted as official winnings.
Now, the player with the lowest score at East Lake wins both the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup, and the $40 million payout is official. Second place gets $5 million, third gets $3.7 million, and even last place takes home $355,000.
The last official purse at East Lake was in 2018 at $9 million, when Tiger Woods won $1.62 million. That year, Justin Rose won the FedEx Cup bonus without winning a playoff event.
Patrick Cantlay supports the new format, saying that beating the best 30 players in the season during the final week is a huge achievement.
